In a historic moment for NASA, the space agency confirmed on Monday that astronauts aboard its Artemis II mission reached farther from Earth than any human in history, creating a new record that stood for more than 50 years since the Apollo 13 mission in 1970.
The crew of four members exceeded the previously crossed distance at 12:56 PM CDT on Monday. These astronauts traveled 248,655 miles from Earth, extending that distance to nearly 252,756 miles at the mission’s farthest point.

The space agency described the moment as a milestone in its renewed push towards deep space exploration and a crucial step for its future lunar missions.
,Artemis II Crew And Mission Progress,NASA’s Artemis II mission has a crew of four astronauts comprising Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Heremy Hansen.
The crew continues to document the Moon and deep space using the advanced imaging tools, six days into the mission. As a part of the flyby, the astronuats will cross within nearly 4,067 miles of the Moon’s surface, witnessing a rare human view of its far side.
During the flyby, the crew lost contact with the control room on Earth for at least 40 minutes. Interestingly, they also saw a solar eclipse just a few thousand miles above the Moon.
The space agency has also shared a video of the spacecraft entering the solar eclipse. , ,NASA said in a post on X, “Artemis II is now entering a solar eclipse that will last for about an hour as Orion, the Moon and the Sun align.
During this phase, the crew will see the Sun disappear behind a mostly darkened Moon. ”,When Will Astronauts Return To Earth,NASA shared that Artemis II is closer to the Moon than to Earth.
